E-Mail:

EnRoute 1.4.3b1 (The Internet Mail standard on the Newton. ISO 8859-1 8 bit text transfer, sending and receiving of Newton packages, multiple POP Accounts accessible in just one step/connection, unbeatable handling of e-mail messages thanks to the new POP List Manager. Comes with every MP 2x00, emate. If it only had a PGP 5.x plugin and APOP support...)

Eudora Light 1.1 (Now Freeware! Former Eudora Pro. Fast! Easy E-Mail Client for all Newtons. Easy accessible. Just 3 Packages. APOP. Fast filtering. Mark messages as remote delete. If you need just basic E-Mail with one POP Account and if you do not miss ISO 8859-1 encoding and sending/receiving of newton packages/data, then go for it!)

GoFetch 1.27 (Easy and fast on my 2100. Comparable to Eudora, but: No Filters, no ISO 8859-1, no remote delete of e-mails left on the server. Version 2.0 is overdue. Excellent for MP 120, 130 users by using the "shell modul" that does NOT require NIE what frees up precious heap! BUT: Eudora is freeware now....see for yourself if its worth the money, test the 30 day demo.)

SimpleMail 4.1.3 Filtering of E-Mails, Sound, Image and better Text stationaries, X-Face Support and more. Freeware Mail Client. Has now a HTML Stationary to decode HTML e-mails. Fast. Small. Best working solution for sending and receiving Newton data / packages. Browse mail on server, ISO 8859-1 (subject, sender, recipients), recognises more MIME encoding methods, is more tolerant of those it doesn't recognise, Can Select All message text for reply quoting entire message, unwrap text. COOL: Read your large e-mails even more comfortable with X-Ports ICS Text viewer, that works with SimpleMail! Cons: Management / remote delete of e-mails on server and filtering is still unbeatable with Eudora ...Positiv: Sends/Receives Packages! Freeware and small...so give it a try, especially on small Newts like 120, 130!)

LunaSuite Pro 2.1 (final/beta? Soon to be freeware, clli@kagi.com is working on bugfixes.) (Requires MP 2x00. The fastest E-Mail Client I tested. APOP, ISO 8859 and HTML e-mails and many other data types. Cons: Eudora has better e-mail management. Sending and receiving of newton data / packages rarely really worked for me. Oversized for E-Mail only, has WWW, FTP, SMS modules built in. Demo 30 days available. Online purchase only. 69.95$)

eNotes 2.0 (Got an working URL to download it again (Planetnewton). I think furhter development of eNotes 2.0 has stopped.)

UniMail 1.01 (From Enfour, a shell E-Mail client. Interesting for 120 users.)

eNotes 1.6b1 (Shell Mail Client, interesting for MP 1x0 Users)

LunaMail (Shell Mail Client, from the makers of Lunasuite)

Newsreader:

InkSpot 1.27 (THE Newsreader for the Newton. Still in development. Even more improvments and features as well as bugfixes since version 1.18. 1.18 fixed the nasty disconnection error by allowing to set a number of automatic reconnects. The bestseller got another update. Dejavu really cares about its products. A must have! Demo for 25 Connections. 25$)

PaperBoy 1.54 (Rumours say it is buggy. On my 2100 nothing but error reports. May be it is due to the German NOS 2.1? Demo for 30 days. 29.95$)

Newt's Paper 0.8 (Looks interesting, worked from the start, Macintalk aware. Works with pURL from Digital Objectives and Newstcape. But somewhat strange configuration and concept, often error messages on my 2100. 35$)

WWW:

Newt's Cape 2.1x (The latest version now supports frames! Just reviewed. It is now my choice for WWW on the Newton. Don't get fooled by the first glance at the somewhat strange interface. Steve names it "de gustibus non est disputandum". ;-) Goes beyond the mere viewing of Webpages: Newtscape allows to transfer pages as Document or Source to Notes or Works and work/view with them at any time! Very newtonlike application. Offers much more features (Frames! Tables! HTTP Header!) than Nethopper 3.2 without having to carry around the unecessarily overloaded Lunasuite. I like the cache functions for both HTML and Images. Manage your Bookmarks! Registered Version allows to save a Webpage as Newton Book. Cool! Steve Weyer did more than a good job to the Newton Community with that fine *small* application! Development continues, Version 2.0 with JPEG Plugin and separate Encoding Plugins and scheduled downloading of Webpages! Shareware, 35$. Upgrade from 1.x 10$. )

NetHopper 3.2 (For MP 2x00. Belongs to Spyglass. Version 4.0 was cancelled just in Alpha stadium...no frames, tables, jpeg. With picture loading off fast and efficient. For older Newtons (120, 130) go for Version 2.0.)

LunaSuite 2.1 (final/beta?) (Desktop style browser. Quite stable. Frames, JPEG, animated gif, avi, tables, and much more! A standalone version just for the browser would be great! Integrated suite with e-mail, ftp, sms, www capability. Works now great on a 2100, but overloaded IMHO for smaller systems, they use Newtscape/Eudora for more heap-saving performance. Discontinued. According to Lunatech interested Developers may get the source. Richard Li did a plugin for Chinese (?))

WebExpress 1.03 (Automatic Scheduled Downloading of Webpages for viewing with Nethopper 3.2. Demo 14 days. Pentekk seems to have disappeared, go for AMUG or info-newt to download. There are ways to register it...but not officialy, unfortunately...)

Telnet:

PT 100 1.01 (Shareware 25$. 1.1b4 is faster! Without competition, works just great! Scriptable!)

FTP:

newtFTP 2.0b6 (Shareware 35$. Version 2.0b6 supports uploads! Great!)

LunaSuite 2.1 final (Simple and working FTP part. Also included in the Demoversion, 30 days, Online purchase 69$)

Others:

NPDS 2.02 (Serves Newton Notes, Dates, Names and Screenshots to the Internet, allows posting of new Notes with your Webbrowser! These small packages allow your Newton to do unbelievable things! Matthew Vaughn created something really cool out of the original nHTTPd study. More things to come! Check it out. Lightyear Media Tracker of Newton Webservers )

Hemlock 1.22 (This is the coolest tool around. Internet Search Engine on the Newton, very fast, small and efficient! Uses Sherlock Plugins. The Newton's answer (and Sean Luke's answer!) to Sherlock on MacOS 8.x. Requires Newt's Cape 2.0. Freeware. Must have!)

nHTML 1.0 (Now Freeware! HTML Editor. Interesting if used with NewtFTP 2.0 or Lunasuite FTP!)

Newt's Wheather 1.0 (Weather Info. Shareware.)

NetTime (nntp time server client. really COOL! since 13.1.1998 as Version 1.1 on NU.)

ChatBuddy 1.60 (30 day Demo. IRC with the Newton. Not tested.)

Thumb (Finger Client, part of NIE 2.0 Developer Release.)

NetTest (Many of you have been asking for this package. Tests TCP/UDP Connections, was part of the NIE 1.0 Developer Release.)

Shuffler (Bookmark Solution from Avanti. Avanti seems to have disappeared. Integrates with Newt's Cape and Nethopper. Newt's Cape and Lunasuite have their own Bookmark solutions. More Info also supports Newt's Cape in Names.)
